KATHMANDU: Nepal exported cement and clinker worth nearly Rs 780 million in the fiscal year 2022/23.
Data released by the Department of Customs on Monday revealed that three cement industries exported a total of 1.94 million tons of cement and clinker to India during the review year.
Palpa Cement, Argakhanchi Cement, and Balaji Cement exported a combined 607,073 tons of cement worth Rs 358.95 million and 396,950 tons of clinker worth Rs 420.35 million.
Palpa Cement was the first Nepali company to begin cement export to India in July, 2022. The company has been exporting its ‘Tansen’ brand of cement to the Indian market. Likewise, Argakhanchi Cement started exporting in October. Likewise, Balaji Cement has been exporting ‘Bahubali’ and ‘Shristi’ brands of PPC cement to India.
Nepali cement companies started exploring the export market after the government announced an 8% export subsidy and a 2-15% discount on electricity tariffs for companies consuming electricity worth Rs 100 million or more annually. In addition to cement, a steel company has also begun exporting its products.

According to the Cement Manufacturers Association of Nepal, several cement industries are awaiting quality certification from the Indian government to export their products to India.
A quality certification issued by designated Indian agencies is mandatory for cement exports to India.
Nepali cement companies collectively have an annual production capacity of 22 million tons.
