Buddha Jayanti celebrated in China

BEIJING: The 2569th Buddha Jayanti was celebrated in Beijing on Monday.

The Embassy of Nepal in Beijing organized a special ceremony to mark Buddha Jayanti. Speaking at the event, Nepali ambassador to China, Dr Krishna Prasad Oli talked about the life of Buddha and the significance of his teachings. He also highlighted the important role of Buddhism in fostering close ties between Nepal and China.

Ambassador Oli also added that Nepal-China relations reflect Buddhist principles. “Our diplomatic ties are based on the five principles of peaceful coexistence, embodying mutual respect, understanding, non-violence, equality and peaceful cooperation,” he said.

Venerable Chang Zang, Vice President of the Buddhist Association of China and the Abbot of Lingguang Temple, described China and Nepal as good neighbors with deep people-to-people ties. “The year 2025 marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Nepal and China, the Nepal Tourism Year in China and the 25th anniversary of the completion and consecration of the Chinese Temple in Lumbini, built by our association,” he said.

The embassy hosted prayers, meditation and yoga sessions on the occasion of Buddha Jayanti. Over 120 participants, including diplomats from various countries in Beijing, Nepalis residing in China, Chinese Buddhist followers and other well-wishers, participated in the event.

Buddha Jayanti is observed in China on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month. This year, Chinese Buddhists celebrated it on May 5, 2025.
