SURKHET: Tension has been mounting in Surkhet district headquarters, Birendranagar, since Monday morning as locals protest the death of a sexagenarian in a road accident.

Locals, who are protesting the death of Nadi Rawat (66) of Jajarkot in a road accident in Birendrangar on Sunday, have taken to the streets, demanding action against the culprit. Police are trying to normalize the situation but to no avail. Police have fired four rounds of tear gas shells after protesting locals clashed with police.

According to DSP Laxman Shahi of the District Police Office, Surkhet, altogether 130 police personnel are at Mangalgadhi Chowk where the locals are protesting.

A bus coming from Bulbule had hit Rawat inside Surkhet Bus Park at around 2:30 pm on Sunday. She succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at Karnali Province Hospital, Surkhet.

Police have taken the bus under control. The driver of the bus is on the run, according to Shahi.
