KATHMANDU: The US Embassy in Kathmandu has urged Nepalis to avoid illegal immigration amid a surge in deportations from the United States.
“We are unwavering in our commitment to end illegal immigration and bolster America’s border security,” the embassy said in a social media post on Friday, quoting Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
According to the embassy, many Nepalis are risking their lives and savings chasing false promises of jobs and visas. “Many Nepalis dream of working or living in the United States, but illegal immigration is dangerous and can destroy lives. Every year, many risk their lives and savings by trusting agents who make false promises of job opportunities and visas,” it said. “Many face detention, deportation, criminal penalties, or life-threatening risks along the way. Keep yourselves and your loved ones safe – don’t risk it.”
This comes as the administration of President Donald Trump, who returned to power in January 2025, intensifies its crackdown on undocumented immigrants. Nine Nepali nationals deported from the US arrived in Kathmandu earlier this week. At least 35 Nepalis have been deported from the US since Trump’s return to power.
