Arzu meets Chinese foreign minister in Hong Kong

KATHMANDU: Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Arzu Rana Deuba and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a bilateral meeting in Hong Kong on Friday.

Minister Rana is in Hong Kong as an Observer State Representative to attend the signing ceremony of the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organization for Mediation at the invitation of Foreign Minister Yi.

The two held discussions on Nepal-China relations, mutual interests, shared concerns and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations being celebrated this year.

In the meeting, Rana said that Nepal has always valued its relationship with China and expressed gratitude to the Chinese government and people for their long-standing support and coordination in Nepal’s economic and social development. She also conveyed Nepal’s expectation for continued Chinese support in various sectors, including economic, technical, technology transfer, and foreign direct investment, in the future.

Minister Rana also invited Foreign Minister Yi to visit Nepal to mark 70 years of diplomatic relations.

In response, Foreign Minister Yi congratulated Nepal for successfully organizing the Sagarmatha Sambaad and expressed China’s readiness to collaborate with Nepal to tackle climate change, mitigate its impacts and promote environmental conservation.

The Chinese foreign minister also said that China’s support to Nepal would continue and expressed hope for future coordination with through the international mediation organization being established with China’s involvement.

He also urged Nepal to advance the implementation of agreements and understandings reached during Prime Minister Oli’s China visit.
