KATHMANDU: Argentina scored twice in seven closing stage minutes to beat England 2-1 in the second semifinal in Atlanta early Thursday morning and book their place in a second successive FIFA World Cup final.

England appeared set to reach their first men’s World Cup final since lifting the trophy in 1966 after Anthony Gordon put his side ahead in the 55th minute when he directed Morgan Rogers’ pass from the right wing to the far post to break the deadlock.

Argentina piled on the pressure in the closing stages, but England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford produced a series of fine saves to preserve the lead. Pickford denied Nico Gonzalez’s header and later kept out Alexis Mac Allister’s effort as Argentina searched for an equalizer.

The South Americans finally drew level in the 85th minute when Enzo Fernandez beat the England goalkeeper with a powerful 25-yard strike after controlling Lionel Messi’s pass.

The 2022 champions completed the comeback in stoppage time. After Mac Allister hit the woodwork once again, Lionel Messi delivered a cross into the box and Lautaro Martinez headed home the winner in the 92nd minute.

England will now face France in Saturday night’s third-place play-off, while Argentina will meet Spain in Sunday’s final as they bid to retain their title.
