Argentina lifts 16th Copa America title

KATHMANDU: Defending champions Argentina defeated Colombia 1-0 in extra time to lift a record 16th Copa America title.

Lautaro Martinez scored the only goal of the match in the 112th minute when he connected with Giovani Lo Celso’s through ball and fired a powerful shot over the advancing Colombian keeper to end the fellow South Americans’ 28-game unbeaten streak.

With this victory, Argentina surpassed Uruguay for the most Copa America titles. Uruguay, which finished third in the 2024 Copa America, has 15 Copa America titles.

Likewise, Argentina has become the second-ever national side to win the FIFA World Cup between two continental titles. Argentina earlier won the 2021 Copa America and 2022 FIFA World Cup titles.

Spain was the first team to achieve this feat when it won the 2008 Euro, 2010 FIFA World Cup, and 2012 Euro.
