KATHMANDU: Internet of Things (IOT) devices have been installed in two high-risk locations, on a major land route connecting Kathmandu to the rest of the country, to enable immediate reporting of accidents and disasters.

According to the Armed Police Force (AF) Nepal, the devices have been installed at Simaltal in Bharatpur–29 of Chitwan on Mulgin-Narayanghat Road and Charaudi in Benighat Rorang–7 of Dhading on Prithvi Highway.

“These devices were set up a few days ago in collaboration with Luna GPS Company,” DSP Shailendra Thapa, the joint spokesperson for the APF, said. “In the event of an accident or emergency, the devices instantly notify the Disaster Management Training Center of the Armed Police Force in Kurintar.”

According to Thapa, anyone at the location can report the incident by simply pressing the green button on the device for 10 seconds. “Once pressed, a siren will sound at the training center, and the incident’s location details will appear on the center’s monitor,” DSP Thapa said. “This prompt notification will enable the APF to immediately deploy rescue personnel to the scene.”

The Disaster Management Training Center has already trained residents near the installed devices on the use of the devices.

Events on the Nagdhunga-Narayanghat Corridor can also report incidents through the mobile application of the Luna GPS. According to Thapa, people can report incidents like flood/landslide, fire and accident, or call an ambulance by using the app.
