KATHMANDU: The government has dismissed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dan Bahadur Karki from his post and appointed him security adviser to Prime Minister Balendra Shah.
Government Spokesperson and Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel said the cabinet meeting held on Wednesday decided to appoint Dr Manoj Kumar KC as the new chief of Nepal Police and assign Karki the new role.
Pokharel argued that Karki had not been punished but merely reassigned to a new responsibility.
“Rather than taking action against Karki, we have assigned him a new responsibility,” he said.
Pokhare also said the ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) had also proposed appointing a special adviser to the prime minister on law and order.
The cabinet decision has confirmed long-running rumors that the government was preparing to remove Inspector General Karki for a long time.
The Public Accounts Committee of parliament is investigating allegations of irregularities in the procurement of uniforms for election police personnel against several government officials, including Karki.
