Conduct fair probe into allegations against chief justice, justices: SC full court

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has urged the relevant authorities to conduct a fair and independent investigation into issues reported in various media outlets and on social media platforms involving the chief justice and other justices.

A full court meeting of the Supreme Court held on Monday called for an unbiased investigation into the issues reported in the media as per the constitution and prevailing laws.

“We urge the concerned authorities to conduct an impartial and independent investigation, without prejudice and in accordance with the constitution and the law, into matters published and broadcast in the public domain, and to make the findings, based on facts and evidence, public as soon as possible,” a statement issued by Supreme Court spokesperson and Joint Registrar Dr Ashok Kumar Chhetri said.

The meeting also drew the attention of the concerned authorities to the need to make the findings public at the earliest.

According to the press release, the full court took note of news reports linking the Chief Justice and Supreme Court justices published in different media and social media platforms. The statement added that the chief justice and the justices concerned had already made their positions public in writing.

The full court meeting said the apex court was committed to fulfilling its legal obligations and cooperating with investigations into news reports published and broadcast by the media. It also urged media outlets not to publish or broadcast reports that stigmatize individuals before the investigation reaches a conclusion or obstruct the administration of justice.

“Since the judiciary is an institution that rests on the faith and trust of the public, news related to it should not create confusion or hurt the general public and service seekers,” it added.

The meeting also urged judicial personnel working in all courts to continue their regular judicial duties without being distracted by the published and broadcast reports.
