More than Rs 700 billion cash in public hands: NRB

KATHMANDU: More than Rs 700 billion out of Rs 803.96 billion in circulation is held by the public. This means nearly 89% of banknotes and coins is outside bank vaults.

According to the latest Economic Bulletin released by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) on Thursday, the public holds Rs 713.93 billion in currency.

The bulletin includes data as of the 2025/26 fiscal year-end.

Banks and financial institutions hold the remaining Rs 90.02 billion of the currency in circulation, the central bank said.

Of the total currency in circulation, banknotes accounted for Rs 801.62 billion, while coins accounted for Rs 2.33 billion.

The NRB had banknotes worth Rs 6.06 billion in its vaults as of mid-July. It had no stock of coins.

The total value of banknotes and coins issued by the central bank stood at Rs 810.02 billion at the end of fiscal year 2025/26. Of this, the net issue of banknotes stood at Rs 807.69 billion and that of coins at Rs 2.33 billion.

Meanwhile, the country’s total demand deposits stood at Rs 1,553.91 billion as of mid-July. Of this, Rs 649.86 billion was held by the public, Rs 626.58 billion by banks and financial institutions, and Rs 277.46 billion by the government.
