Disaster incidents claim 362 lives in six months

KATHMANDU: Disaster incidents have claimed 362 lives across the country since mid-April.

According to data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), a total of 7,050 disaster incidents were recorded in the country between April 14 and October 3.

These incidents also left 11 people missing and 2,263 injured.

The figures, however, do not include more than 1,400 deaths reported in connection with the August 26 Bhotekoshi floods.

Snakebites accounted for the highest number of deaths during the period, with 104 fatalities recorded in 1,519 incidents. Landslides followed with 73 deaths from 1,666 incidents.

Floods and lightning strikes each claimed 34 lives. A total of 447 flood and 307 lightning incidents were recorded across the country during the period.

Fires were the most frequently recorded type of disaster after landslides and snakebites, with 1,368 incidents resulting in 26 deaths.

High altitude sickness claimed another 26 lives, while animal attacks killed 20 people in 368 incidents.

Avalanches killed 18 people in four incidents, while hailstorms claimed 15 lives in 519 incidents.

Similarly, heavy rainfall claimed seven deaths, two died due to a boat overturning, and one person each was killed in forest fire and explosion.
