Former CJ Rana handed over to his family

KATHMANDU: Police have handed over former Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana to his family.

The Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office on Sunday afternoon handed over Rana to his family on Sunday afternoon. A team from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office had taken Rana into custody at around 3 a.m. on Sunday.

Police said they had brought him to the office after identifying a security threat to him. They later handed him over to his family, saying he would be provided security at home.

“In Discord, a social media platform, there had been talk of going as far as taking his life,” said SSP Santosh Khadka, chief of the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office. “He was not arrested. He was brought to Teku for his security.”

Rana started his tenure as Chief Justice on January 2, 2022. He was automatically suspended after an impeachment motion was registered against him in parliament on February 13, 2022.

He retired in December 2022 while suspended after approaching the age limit of 65.
