Oppressive rulers will eventually meet their end: Oli

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chairperson KP Sharma Oli has claimed that oppressive, abusive, anti-people and tyrannical rulers will eventually meet their end.

Receiving a memorandum from the Federation of Nepali Journalists and a task force formed to make recommendations for protecting the print media, Oli said he had personally been pursuing the cause of equality and freedom for the past 60 years and had remained on the frontline of struggles for people’s rights.

Oli said current rulers should also understand those who stand up for freedom. “People will oppose rulers who take pleasure in the suffering of others. Such rulers will ultimately be destroyed by the people,” he added.

After the task force drew his attention to the crisis facing the media due to cuts in government welfare advertisements, a slowdown in the market and government neglect, Oli said democracy and press freedom were complementary to each other.

He said attacks on the media were an attempt to weaken democracy as a whole and that such regressive measures would not last long.

Oli said his party, and he personally, had been fighting for freedom of expression for decades and made it clear that the UML fully supported efforts to protect the print media.
