KATHMANDU: Nepal is highlighting the impacts of the climate crisis on the country at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Speaking at a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday, Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai said Nepal would strongly raise the issue that despite making a negligible contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions, the country is suffering disproportionately from their adverse impacts.
Prime Minister Balendra Shah is scheduled to address the General Assembly on September 24.
Rai added that the visit would provide an important opportunity to present to the international community Nepal’s Gen Z movement last year, the successful election that followed and the priorities of the current government.
He said Nepal would also recall the devastating loss caused by the flash flood in the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa and tell the global community how the disaster has reaffirmed that Nepal is on the front lines of the climate crisis.
Similarly, Secretary Rai said Nepal would call for climate justice, including immediate and appropriate compensation and assistance from mechanisms such as the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage.
Rai also said Nepal would appeal to developed countries to facilitate concessional climate finance and technology transfer to support climate-resilient infrastructure, smart agriculture and capacity building for stakeholders.
