KATHMANDU: Former Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has reiterated that the Supreme Court will deliver justice to his faction in the dispute over the party’s legitimacy.
Addressing a discussion organised by the NC’s Bhaktapur district committee on Wednesday, Deuba said he was confident that the apex court would recognize his faction as the legitimate NC.
“We will get legitimacy when the apex court reviews the case,” Deuba said. “Whether during the Panchayat era or when King Gyanendra jailed us, the courts have delivered justice. I believe the Supreme Court will deliver justice to me. We will get the official status.”
Deuba, who returned home on August 13 after a prolonged stay abroad for medical treatment, had also claimed upon arrival that his faction would secure the party’s official status.
The septuagenarian leader argued that his faction should be recognized as the legitimate party because the special general convention was held without completing due procedures.
“The party can call a special general convention. But it is necessary to verify which district and constituency each representative belongs to. Can a special convention be called without verifying the representatives?” Deuba said. “Shouldn’t we check whether they are party members or not?”
He made it clear that special general conventions had been called in the past, but only with the consent of all concerned.
“The party statute has a provision for calling a special general convention. It is the party that calls such a convention,” Deuba said. “A special general convention was also called when Subarna Shumsher was president. It was called after verifying all the representatives.”
