KATHMANDU: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has expressed condolences over the loss of lives in the devastating Bhotekoshi floods and said the United States is ready to provide additional support to Nepal.
Rubio conveyed the message during a telephone conversation with Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chairperson Rabi Lamichhane on Monday.
According to a statement posted on the RSP’s social media channels, Rubio expressed his deepest condolences to the families of those killed in the disaster and solidarity with the people and government of Nepal.
Lamichhane told the US Secretary of State that the government was mobilising all available resources for ongoing search, rescue and relief operations in the flood-affected areas.
He also assured Rubio that Nepal was equally committed to ensuring the safety and security of foreign nationals affected by the disaster.
Lamichhane thanked the US government for its support during the crisis.
In response, Rubio said the United States was ready to provide additional assistance to Nepal.
The August 26 floods caused widespread loss of life and extensive damage to homes, roads, bridges, hydropower projects and other infrastructure in Rasuwa and several districts downstream. The death toll has crossed 1,350, while nearly 4,000 are still missing.
