KATHMANDU: The dissident faction of the Nepali Congress (NC), led by former party President Sher Bahadur Deuba, is preparing to move the Supreme Court seeking the apex court’s order to halt the process for the party’s 15th General Convention.

The faction decided to pursue legal action after the party’s Central Working Committee published the schedule for the general convention.

Deuba faction leader Min Bishwakarma said the convention process should not move forward because a related case is already pending before the Supreme Court.

According to Bishwakarma, preparations are underway to file a writ petition seeking to stop the convention process. He said the faction would approach the court on Wednesday if possible, or file the case within the next one or two days.

Earlier, a three-day national gathering of the Deuba faction leaders decided not to recognize party President Gagan Kumar Thapa and concluded that the 15th General Convention should be held under Deuba’s leadership.

Meanwhile, leader of the dissident faction, Dr. Shashank Koirala, has already written to the Election Commission and the Nepali Congress Central Office in Sanepa, urging them not to proceed with the convention process immediately.

Party President Gagan Thapa, however, remains firm on holding the general convention within the scheduled timeframe.
