KATHMANDU: The main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) has said that unnecessary meddling with the core spirit of the constitution, democratic values, and the federal system will not be tolerated.
Speaking during a special hour in the meeting of the House of Representatives on Monday, NC parliamentary party leader Bhishma Raj Angdembe said that serious dialogue on a serious issue like constitutional amendment has not taken place yet. “Any tampering with the basic essence of the constitution, democratic values and federalism will be unacceptable,” Angdembe said.
He further said that the task force formed by the government for constitutional amendments is immature.
“During its first 100 days, the government was active on several fronts like good governance, anti-corruption efforts, administrative reforms, service delivery and certain structural changes. Some positive works have been done,” Angdembe said. “However, the Prime Minister has been undermining the constitution.”
Angdembe added that while it is easy to go viral on social media, working with depth and seriousness as the country’s Prime Minister is difficult. He also advised the Prime Minister to abandon the pursuit of viral fame and instead guide the nation effectively.
“If the Prime Minister prioritizes writing social media posts over attending Parliament, how can the dignity of the people’s supreme representative body be maintained?” he questioned. “I urge the Prime Minister to remember that if he fails, it is not just the Prime Minister but the entire country that will face a crisis.”
Meanwhile, Angdembe also said asset investigations must not be selective and should proceed credibly. “Such investigations must begin with the current Prime Minister himself,” he said, adding that the opposition is ready to support the government’s initiative.
