Decision on minimum salary of ECD teachers, school employees soon: Pokharel Sashmit Pokharel

KATHMANDU: Minister for Education and Sports Sashmit Pokharel has said that the goernment will soon take a decision on the minimum remuneration of early childhood development (ECD) teachers and school employees at community schools.

Responding to queries raised during discussions on various issues in the House of Representatives on Thursday, Minister Pokharel said the government was working to address the issue.

“School employees, child development facilitators (ECD teachers) and school accountants are currently receiving Rs 10,000, Rs 12,000 and Rs 15,000, respectively, from the federal government, while the minimum wage set by the Labour Act is Rs 19,500. The practice has been that local governments provide the remaining amount,” Pokharel said.

He said the upcoming Education Act would address the issue in the long term by creating permanent positions for such employees.
“Since this is an essential requirement at present, even without creating full positions immediately, we will find a solution through the Education Act for a sustainable arrangement in the future,” Pokharel added.

Pokharel said his ministry was coordinating with the Ministry of Finance on how additional allowances could be provided to teachers and school employees.
