MoFA seeks applications to fill 17 vacant ambassadorial positions

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has opened applications to fill ambassadorial vacancies in 17 Nepali diplomatic missions abroad, including key postings in India, China, the United States and the United Kingdom.

The ministry on Thursday issued a public call for applications along with detailed terms of reference, introducing for the first time an open competitive model for ambassadorial appointments. Interested Nepali citizens can apply by June 5.

The ambassadorial posts became vacant after the interim government led by Sushila Karki and the current government headed by Prime Minister Balendra Shah recalled envoys appointed by the previous government led by KP Sharma Oli.

According to the notice published by the ministry, applicants must be at least 35 years old, hold a bachelor’s degree from a recognised university and have experience in international relations or diplomacy. The ministry has also prioritized candidates with postgraduate qualifications, leadership experience, and expertise in economic diplomacy, trade promotion and multilateral negotiations.

Ambassadorial positions are vacant at Nepali missions in India, Australia, Sri Lanka, South Korea, Denmark, South Africa, China, Germany, Israel, Malaysia, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, the US, the UK and Japan.
