POKHARA: Pokhara Metropolitan City (PMC) Office on Thursday demolished various structures located in front of ‘Hong Kong Bazaar’ at Prithvichowk.
The demolished structures included buildings and facilities used by Sahara Club Pokhara, Community Police Service, GEFONT Gandaki, Nepal Trade Union Congress, and Himali Cultural Family. Several shops and a public restroom were among the structures demolished.
Earlier, Pokhara Metropolitan City Office and the Pokhara Valley Town Development Committee had issued a public notice directing occupants to vacate public and government land.
The PMC used several machines to demolish the structures after the deadline to vacate the government land expired. A large number of police personnel, as well as elected representatives, were present during the demolition campaign.
Some organisations had already vacated their buildings and structures in line with the notice. Sahara Club had moved its belongings to the Sahara Academy in Dobilla, while GEFONT, the Nepal Trade Union Congress, Community Police Service and Himali Cultural Family had also been relocating their materials.
The land around Prithvichowk, owned by the Pokhara Valley Town Development Committee, had long been occupied and used by various organisations and individuals.
Meanwhile, demolition of illegal structures built in violation of standards along the Firkekhola corridor is also continuing. According to PMC, a total of 160 structures will be demolished in the area. Around two-thirds of them have already been torn down.
