KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration has directed all government bodies to shut down trade union offices operating within the civil service.
Issuing a circular to all ministries, departments, commissions and other state entities late Tuesday, the ministry said that Section 53 of the Civil Service Act 1993 (Nepal), which contained provisions on trade unions, has been repealed through the Ordinance to Amend Some Nepal Acts, 2026.
The ministry has instructed offices to immediately close departmental and committee-level trade union offices, including those of the official trade union of civil servants.
Likewise, it has directed officials to reclaim government property used for trade union purposes, including office spaces, buildings, vehicles and other facilities provided to such committees or affiliated staff.
Furthermore, it has instructed employees, who were engaged in trade union activities at various levels, to their designated roles and carry out duties in accordance with their sanctioned posts.
