Deuba faction leaders stress party unity

KATHMANDU: Leaders from the Sher Bahadur Deuba-led faction of the Nepali Congress (NC) have emphasized the need to move ahead by strengthening internal unity within the party.

A meeting of the leaders elected through the 15th General Convention, held in Kathmandu on Sunday, at the call of former Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka, concluded that the focus should now be on consolidating internal unity.

Kundan Raj Kafle, a leader of the Deuba faction, said after the meeting that Sanepa, the party’s central office, should play a leading role in uniting all factions under the current circumstances. “Discussions among party leaders, who did not participate in the special general convention, will continue in the coming days as well. It will be decided on our future course of action,” Kafle added

Along with Khadka, leaders like Bimalendra Nidhi, Krishna Prasad Sitaula, Prakash Man Singh, and Min Bahadur Bishwakarma, among others, were present in the meeting.

Earlier on Saturday, leaders of the Deuba faction decided to accept the Supreme Court’s verdict to recognize the new Central Working Committee under Gagan Kumar Thapa, elected through the Special General Convention held in January.

Despite some grounds for disagreement with the court’s ruling, the meeting decided to accept it and move forward. They, however, said the responsibility of uniting the party now rests on party president Thapa.

They also said Thapa’s conduct and approach will determine whether the party’s 15th General Convention will be inclusive and unified.
