KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has issued separate show cause orders to the government, asking why former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak should not be released.
The apex court issued the order hearing separate habeas corpus petitions filed by families of Oli and Lekhak.
A single bench of Justice Meghraj Pokharel issued the order while hearing the petition filed by Oli’s wife, Radhika Shakya. Shakya lodged the petition on Sunday, claiming that his arrest was unlawful. She has made the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, among others, as defendants.
Similarly, a bench of Justice Kumar Regmi issued a show cause order in response to a habeas corpus petition filed by Lekhak’s wife, Yashoda.
Both Oli and Lekhak were arrested on Saturday morning based on recommendations made by a commission led by a high-level commission formed to prob the incidents of September 8 and 9 last year.
Oli was the Prime Minister, and Lekhak was the Home Minister during the last September protests, which claimed 76 lives and caused damage to public and private property worth billions of rupees.
