KATHMANDU: Separate habeas corpus petitions have been filed at the Supreme Court seeking the release of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.
Oli’s wife, Radhika Shakya, filed the petition on Sunday, claiming that her husband has been unlawfully detained.
Similarly, Lekhak’s wife Yashoda Lekhak has also filed a habeas corpus petition.
The Supreme Court has scheduled the hearing on both petitions for Monday.
Oli, who is also the chairperson of the CPN-UML, and Nepali Congress leader Lekhak were arrested on Saturday morning on homicide-related charges during the alleged suppression of the Gen Z movement of September 8 last year.
A high-level probe commission led by former Judge Gauri Bahadur Kaki had recommended legal action against the two, holding them responsible for the crackdown. The new government ordered their arrest based on the commission’s report.
