Oli, Lekhak arrested within 24 hrs of new govt formation

KATHMANDU: Less than 24 years after its formation, the government led by Balendra Shah has arrested for mer Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak in connection with last September’s deadly protests.

A police team led by SSP Santosh Khadka from the Crime Investigation Bureau Office arrested Oli from his residence in Gundu, Bhaktapur, on Saturday morning.

A huge number of security personnel had reached the residence overnight before taking him into custody. Party leaders briefly prevented police personnel from reaching Oli’s residence. However, he was later transported to the District Police Range, Kathmandu, in his own vehicle.

Officials say the arrest was made as part of an ongoing investigation into the death of 19 people during the protests on September 8.

Police earlier detained Lekhak from his residence in Katunje, Bhaktapur. Both leaders had been recommended for action by a high-level commission formed to probe the unrest.
