KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has opened its account in the House of Representatives following the victory of Ranjana Darshana from the Kathmandu-1 constituency.

According to the Election Commission, Darshana received 1,5049 votes. Her closest contender, Prabal Thapa of Npeali Congress, got 6,364 votes.  Rabindra Mishra of Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) came third with 3,972.

The victory has drawn widespread attention as Darshana had campaigned while heavily pregnant during the election period. She delivered her baby a few days before the voting day.

Darshana first emerged in the political scene when she contested the mayoral race in Kathmandu as a candidate of the Bibkesheel Nepali Party at a young age of 22. Although she was defeated, she secured nearly 24,000 votes.

Bibekshel then merged with Sajha Nepal Party to form Bibeksheel Sajha Party. However, the unification did not last long, and she, together with some friends, reinstated Bibeksheel Nepal Party. The party merged with the RSP a few months before the vote.

Although Darshana was initially included on the party’s proportional representation (PR) list, the party later fielded her under the first-past-the-post voting.
