KATHMANDU: The National Assembly has unanimously endorsed a proposal to withdraw the Social Media Regulation Bill, 2025.
National Assembly Chairperson Narayan Dahal presented the proposal to withdraw the bill, which was under consideration in the upper house, on Monday. After all members supported the proposal, he announced that the bill had been withdrawn.
Earlier, Chairperson of the Legislation Management Committee of the upper house, Tulsakumari Dahal, had tabled the committee’s report on the Bill.
A cabinet meeting held on Thursday had decided to withdraw the bill. Among other provisions, the bill proposed imposing a fine of up to Rs 2.5 million on individuals operating social media platforms in Nepal without permission.
