KATHMANDU: Even though the Election Commission (EC) has recognized the new Central Working Committee of the Nepali Congress (NC) led by Gagan Kumar Thapa, former President Sher Bahadur Deuba still identifies himself as the party President.
As the NC President, Deuba published greetings on the occasion of the Basanta Panchami festival. He continues to identify himself as the President of Nepali Congress on his social media pages as well.
The 2nd Special General Convention of the party, held in the second week of January, elected a new Central Working Committee, with Gagan Kumar Thapa as President. However, the Deuba faction of the party has refused to recognize the new Central Working Committee. The faction has filed a petition at the Supreme Court, demanding that the special general convention was organized by going against the party statute and, hence, is invalid. The faction continues to assert that Deuba is the party’s legitimate President, even though many leaders of the faction filed candidacy for the March 5 polls with tickets signed by the new President Thapa.
Meanwhile, the new Central Working Committee of the party is being sworn into office at the central party office in Sanepa, Lalitpur, on Friday
