KATHMANDU: As the special convention called by the two general secretaries of Nepali Congress (NC) draws closer, district working committees are gradually issuing statements urging general convention delegates to attend the convention.
Sources say as many as 30 district presidents have come out in favor of the special convention. District committees of Lalitpur, Kavre, Kaski, Udayapur, Sindhupalchowk and Dhankuta have so far appealed to convention representatives to participate in the special convention.
On Wednesday, Lalitpur District President of the NC, Jitendra Kumar Shrestha, issued a statement urging all delegates to stand in favor of the special convention. Likewise, on Thursday, Kaski District Committee President Kishor Dutta Baral also called on party members to support the historic convention. Similarly, Udayapur District Committee President Himal Karki also released a statement requesting general convention delegates to participate in the special convention.
Earlier, five provincial committee presidents aligned themselves with the establishment faction. However, Lumbini Province Committee President Amar Singh Pun has been actively campaigning in favor of the special convention, while Gandaki Province Committee President Shukra Raj Sharma has remained silent so far.
Meanwhile, Nepali Congress Central Office Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Paudel termed the special convention unjustified and appealed to delegates not to participate.
Leaders backing the Special General Convention have said that participation by all NC members is essential to make the convention historic, successful, and meaningful.
