Don’t shift responsibility by blaming party president, Mahat tells Gagan

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) Spokesperson Prakash Sharan Mahat has advised General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa not to present himself in an exaggerated manner.

Speaking to journalists after the party’s Central Work Execution Committee meeting in Lalitpur on Thursday, Mahat urged Thapa to refrain from exaggeration and to act in line with his responsibilities within the party.

Thapa had alleged on Wednesday that although party President Sher Bahadur Deuba was not attending meetings, he was exercising all authority from his residence. Thapa had also said that if the general convention is not held on the scheduled date, the option of a special general convention would remain open.

Mahat said it would not be appropriate to evade responsibility by blaming party president Sher Bahadur Deuba for failing to hold the general convention on time. “He is the party’s general secretary. All leaders and cadres have expectations of him,” Mahat said. “Therefore, no issue should be made public in an exaggerated manner. There is no question of blaming anyone at this stage. The party president has entrusted all responsibilities to the acting president.”

Mahat also said that the Central Work Execution Committee on Thursday held discussions on issues related to the general convention and the preparation of the proportional representation list for the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5.
“Discussion on various criteria for proportional list is ongoing,” he added.

Mahat also said district-level conventions do not appear likely to be held on time due to disputes over active membership.
