Gagan for holding general convention directly after ward, constituency conventions

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has proposed holding the party’s general convention within the stipulated timeframe by conducting ward- and constituency-level conventions first, followed by the general convention.

Speaking at a meeting of the party’s Central Work Execution Committee at the central party office in Sanepa on Wednesday, Thapa acknowledged there was time pressure to hold the general convention according to the schedule, and therefore suggested proceeding from ward and constituency conventions to the central convention.

He proposed that the convention of other party levels could be held after the general convention.

“If this proposal is rejected, no one can stop a special convention,” Thapa said after the meeting.

Thapa also accused party President Sher Bahadur Deuba of conducting all party work from his residence despite assigning Vice President Purna Bahadur Khadka as the Acting President. “The President should be the most concerned about the party’s overall interests,” he added.

Thapa also proposed deploying fully empowered representatives in the field to resolve disputes related to active membership.

NC Spokesperson Prakash Sharan Mahat told reporters that discussions on General Secretary Thapa’s proposal have begun. “Other leaders have said that changes to the schedule should not be allowed to affect the general convention,” Mahat said.

General Secretary Thapa, Joint General Secretaries Mahendra Yadav and Badri Pandey, and leaders Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar, Krishna Prasad Sitaula, Dr Shekhar Koirala, Gyanendra Bahadur Karki, Uma Regmi, Sujata Koirala, NP Saud, and Anand Prasad Dhungana expressed their views on Wednesday.

The meeting will resume at 1 pm on Thursday.
