KATHMANDU: CPN (Maoist Center) leader and former Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara was arrested in Kathmandu on Sunday for his alleged involvement in gold smuggling through vapes.
According to a statement issued by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of the Nepal Police, Mahara was taken into custody for investigation into the gold smuggling case.
Investigative officers of Nepal Police had recorded Mahara’s statement a few days ago.
Police sources say Mahara and his son Rahul were frequently in contact with and two Chinese nationals Lui Honsong and Daojin Wang who were allegedly involved in smuggling gold concealed in vapes through Tribhuvan International Airport.
Mahara was questioned in the same case earlier also. However, investigations did not move forward at the time, allegedly due to his political influence and power.
