KATHMANDU: Phur Gelje Sherpa has been elected President of the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA).
In the voting for the new executive committee held on Saturday, Sherpa secured 342 votes against his rival Kul Bahadur Gurung, who garnered 288.
Sherpa’s panel registered a sweeping victory, winning almost all key positions except for the position of First Vice President and one executive member seat.
Ishwari Poudel was elected Senior Vice President with 345 votes. He defeated Tika Gurung, who received 258.
However, in the First Vice President position, Mingma Gyabo Sherpa secured 359 votes to beat Kaji Sherpa (Speed) who managed 256, marking a rare setback for Fur Gelje’s camp.
Bodh Raj Bhandari won the Second Vice President position with 368 votes, overcoming Dhan Bahadur Gurung who received 238.
Rajendra Bahadur Lama was elected as General Secretary secured 318 votes. He defeated Bimal Naharki (209) and Shiva Sapkota (68). Similarly, Chandan Thapa (358) was elected to the position of Secretary, defeating Ngima Diki Sherpa (244).
In a rare tie, the Treasurer post saw both Ngima Nurbu Sherpa and Sumi Lama earn 304 votes each. As per agreement, the two will each serve half of the three-year term.
Kedar Nyaupane (302), Thupden Sherpa (326), Mulal Gurung (351), Dendi Sherpa (311), Bikram Karki (306), Rinje Sherpa (301), and Nisha Bhote (307) were elected alongside independents Madhav Kumar Dhamala (278), Gokul Thapa (288), Devendra Dangol (295) and Diki Sherpa (288) have beeb elected as Executive Members.
