KATHMANDU: The Election Commission has refused to recognize Lalbir Chaudhary as the Chairperson of the Nagarik Unmukti Party.
A national gathering of the party held on July 31 had decided to remove Ranjita Shrestha as the Chairperson and nominated Lalbir Chaudhary to the position. The party applied to the EC to update its documents accordingly.
However, the EC refused to recognize Shrestha as the new Chairperson. According to the EC Spokesperson Nita Pokhrel Aryal, Lalbir’s name was not among the 21 members of the central committee registered with the EC, and the proposed change was not in line the party statute.
Lalbir is the father of NUP Patron Resham Chaudhary, while Ranjita is Resham’s wife.
Earlier in 2023, the EC had refused to recognize Resham as the party chairperson.
