Rupakot Majhuwagadhi Mayor ends indefinite hunger strike

KATHMANDU: Tirtha Raj Bhattarai, the mayor of Rupakot Majhuwagadhi Municipality of Khotang, has ended his indefinite hunger strike after reaching a 16-point agreement with the government.

Bhattarai broke his fast on Sunday following a 16-point agreement with the Ministry of Urban Development and the Ministry of Forests and Environment.

Minister for Forest and Environment Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri and Minister for Health and Population Pradeep Paudel were present on the occasion.

Speaking after ending his protest, Bhattarai said everyone must contribute to mitigating the impacts of climate change. He also expressed confidence that the government would implement the agreement.

The agreement includes a provision to begin using bamboo, indigenous timber, or other locally produced materials in the first phase across all agencies under the forest ministry.

In the agreement, the government has made a commitment to the effective implementation of the Wildlife Damage Relief Distribution Directive, 2023. The directive aims to simplify the process of providing compensation for loss of life and property by wildlife.
