Kami Rita rewrites record with 31st Everest summit

KATHMANDU: Veteran Nepali climber Kami Rita Sherpa achieved a historic milestone by summiting Mount Everest for a record 31st time on Tuesday morning.

According to Seven Summit Treks, Kami Rita reached the summit at around 4 am serving as the main guide for Army Adventure Wing Everest Expedition.

With this, he has extended his world record for the most Everest ascents.

The 55-year-old climbing guide from Thame in the Everest region first set the world record for most Everest ascents in 2018 when he became the first person to reach the summit of Mount Everest for a record 22 times. He had equalled the record of 21 summits held by legendary Everest summiteer Apa Sherpa in 2021.

Kami Rita recorded his first Everest summit in 1994 as a high-altitude worker. Since then, he has reached the summit every year except 1995, when he fell short of the summit for some 300 meters, 1996, 2001, 2011, 2014, 2015, and 2020. He has made successful ascents twice in 2009, 2010, 2013, 2019, 2023, and 2024.
