KATHMANDU: Dr Jagman Gurung, acting coordinator of the Joint People’s Movement Committee for the Restoration of Monarchy, has said that they would offer voluntary arrest en masse if the leaders detained during their protest in Tinkune of Kathmandu on March 28 are not released.
Speaking at a program in Kathmandu on Wednesday, Gurung declared that if those arrested in the Tinkune incident are not released and Nawaraj Subedi is not freed from house arrest by May 4, they will voluntarily submit to mass arrest on May 5.
“I will lead the mass arrest initiative,” Dr Gurung said. “Our upcoming protest will be in the form of civil disobedience. There is no need for an armed struggle at this stage.”
Stating that rumors were being spread that the pro-monarchy movement is weakening, Dr Gurung claimed they were currently engaged in strategic planning. “We will go into action from May 4,” he added.
Meanwhile, Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Nepal Chairperson Kamal Thapa accused the state of turning the gathering in Tinkune on March 28 violent. He claimed the government was trying to frame former King Gyanendra Shah in order to discredit and weaken the monarchist movement. Stating that the constitution is being amended to prevent future changes, Thapa warned that such a move would ignite unrest across the country.
