ITAHARI: A clash broke out between two factions of the Nepal Students’ Union (NSU), the student union of the ruling Nepali Congress (NC), at Mahendra Morang Adarsh Multiple Campus in Biratnagar on Thursday.
Three students were injured in the clash between the faction supporting NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba and leader Dr Shekhar Koirala.
The injured include NSU Morang District President Saroj Pokharel, Secretary Guddu Saha and NSU Central Committee Member Puja Bishwas. All three are close to Dr Koirala.
They were allegedly attacked by leaders led by Jaswant Paudel, the president of the Feee Student Union (FSU) at the campus.
Bishwas said they were when they reached the campus premises to assess the situation at the campus ahead of the free student union elections. She added that the altercation began with physical assaults and later the assailants tried to use an axe.
Paudel, on the other hand, said that the erupted after the visitors attempted to form a new NSU unit on campus without prior consultation. “I was previously the NSU Campus President. After getting elected to the position of FSU President, I appointed Prashant Yadav as the acting president. Everything was running smoothly until suddenly, there was an attempt to form a new committee, which led to the dispute and subsequent clash,” Paudel, who is close to party Deuba’s faction, said.
According to Paudel, NSU District President Pokhrel had arrived on campus with plans to form a new committee.
DSP Madan KC of the District Police Office, Morang, said that an investigation into the incident is underway.
