KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has said that the Nepali people are not seeking an alternative to democracy.
Speaking to journalists at Biratnagar Airport on Friday, Thapa said they do not see any alternative to democracy as they have already experienced dictatorial and autocratic regimes multiple times.
“The beauty of the republic is that even the former king has been granted the freedom to express his views as a citizen. In the past, during the reign of the former king, we were jailed on charges of sedition just for speaking out. We won’t arrest or silence the former king just for expressing his opinions,” Thapa said.
He added that citizens express dissatisfaction not with the system of governance but with the actions of the government.
“Such dissatisfaction is expressed through elections. Therefore, party leaders and cadres must remain active for the overall benefit of the people by avoiding factionalism and internal divisions,” Thapa added.
He expressed confidence that a consensus on ordinances will be reached soon as Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has been holding discussions with the different political parties.
