Supreme Cooperative Fraud: Lamichhane arrives in Bhairahawa

LUMBINI: Former Home Minister and Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane arrived in Butwal on Tuesday to appear before the Rupandehi District Court.

Lamichhane is appearing before the court as a charge sheet has been filed against him at the district court for his alleged involvement in the misappropriation of funds from Butwal-based Supreme Cooperative.

RSP sources say Lamichhane has checked in at Hotel Marigold, Bhairahawa, and will appear before the district court on Wednesday.

So far, the District Government Attorney Office, Rupandehi, has filed charge sheets against 42 individuals in the Rupandehi District Court for misappropriating funds from Supreme Cooperative. The total amount claimed from these individuals in cases related to cooperative fraud, organized crime, and money laundering is Rs 1.43 billion.

Out of the 1,903 depositors of Supreme Cooperative, 1,872 have filed complaints against the 42 individuals at the Area Police Office, Butwal. Police investigations have shown funds from the cooperative were siphoned to Gorkha Media Network. Lamichhane served as the managing director of the media company before he formed RSP.

Lamichhane was earlier brought to Rupandehi on November 12 to record his statement while in the custody of the District Police Office, Kaski, during an investigation into the misappropriation of deposits from the Pokhara-based Suryadarshan Cooperative. He was released on bail of Rs 6.5 million by the Kaski District Court. A similar cooperative fraud case against Lamichhane is also sub judice in the Kathmandu District Court.
