KATHMANDU: Rojina Shrestha of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has been elected Chairperson of Ward 16 of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC).
In the by-election held on Sunday, Shrestha secured 2,902 votes, defeating her closest rival, Devendra Pathak of the Nepali Congress, who received 2,214 votes.
Ward 16 of KMC falls under the Kathmandu-7 constituency of the House of Representatives. Ganesh Parajuli of RSP is the sitting lawmaker of the constituency.
This is the first time that the RSP, which was founded just a few months before the 2022 general elections, has participated in a local body election. With this victory, Shrestha becomes the first leader of the party to hold a position in local government.
The seat became vacant following the demise of Mukunda Rijal of the Nepali Congress, who was elected Ward Chair in the 2022 local elections.
