KATHMANDU: Political leaders have expressed their sorrow at the passing of Sitaram Yechury, General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) – CPI(M).
They remembered Yechury’s support and goodwill towards Nepal’s democratic movement, stating that Nepal has lost a true friend with his demise.
Former Prime Minister and CPN (Maoist Center) Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal said that Yechury’s demise marks the loss of a prominent leader of the communist movement and a good friend.
Similarly, Nepali Congress (NC) leader Krishna Prasad Sitaula remembered Yechury’s unforgettable contributions to Nepal-India relations and Nepal’s democratic movement. “Yechury made a distinctive contribution in garnering sympathy and support from India’s leftist and other political parties who believe in democracy and democratic processes for the development of Nepal’s political movement,” he added.
Recalling his multiple meetings with Yechury in Kathmandu and New Delhi, Sitaula said he knew Yechury as a leftist leader who always maintained goodwill and supported Nepal’s democratic movement.
Likewise, senior communist leader Bamdev Gautam said that the Nepali communist movement has suffered a significant loss with the passing of a leader who closely understood Nepal and its people, and always sympathized with the Nepali communist movement. “He strongly supported strengthening Nepal’s nationality and developing a democratic system here,” Gautam said, recalling Yechury’s support during the movement.
Maoist Center leader Surendra said that Nepal has lost a good friend with the passing of a personality who understood Nepal and its people very closely. “Yechury played a special role in bringing the decade-long people’s war to a conclusion,” he added.
Yechury, 72, passed away on Thursday while undergoing treatment at AIIMS Hospital in Delhi.
