Deputy Speaker Rana Magar should step down: NC

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress has suggested that Deputy Speaker Indira Rana Magar should pave the way for a resolution as questions have been raised about her conduct.

A meeting of the party’s office-bearers held on Wednesday morning arrived at the conclusion, according to Chief Whip Shyam Kumar Ghimire. “The NC’s official position is that serious questions about the Deputy Speaker have been raised. Therefore, it would be appropriate for her to resign and clear the way,” Ghimire said.

Deputy Speaker Rana Magar, who is from Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), had written a letter to the US Embassy some 19 months ago, requesting the mission to expedite visa interviews for five individuals to attend the 67th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York. However, the five individuals were not granted permission to travel to the US.

“The Deputy Speaker should not make such recommendations. This is an insult to parliament,” Ghimire said. “The NC understands that this has also brought shame to the country.”
