KATHMANDU: Gokarna Raj Bista of CPN-UML has been elected to the House of Representatives from Gulmi-2 constituency. This is his fourth victory in the parliamentary elections from Gulmi.
Bista defeated Ram Kumari Jhankri of CPN (Unified Socialist) by 2,034 votes. While Bista polled 28,476 votes, Jhankri received 26,442 votes.
Both these leaders are former party colleagues. When CPN-UML split last year, Jhankri joined Unified Socialist-led by Madhav Kumar Nepal. She was elected to the parliament under the proportionate representation (PR) system in 2017.
Jhankri – the common candidate of the five-party ruling coalition – had the support of big political parties like the Nepali Congress and CPN (Maoist Center).
This is Bista’s fourth victory from Gulmi. He won the first two elections – – 1999 and 2013 – from Gulmi-3 and the remaining two from Gulmi-2.
