KATHMANDU: Lionel Messi and Julian Alvarez fired Argentina into the Copa America 2024 final with a 2-0 win over Canada in New Jersey on Wednesday morning.
Julian Alvarez scored in the 22nd minute to give Argentina the lead, while Lionel Messi scored in the 51st minute to seal Argentina’s spot in the final.
Alvarez controlled Rodrigo De Paul’s long pass from the center, dodged a Canadian defender, and unleashed a shot from near the penalty spot between the legs of Canada keeper Maxime Crepeau to give Argentina a 1-0 lead.
Messi redirected Enzo Fernandez’s shot from the edge of the box into the Canadian net to get his first goal of the 2024 Copa America.
Canada had chances to claw back into the game but lacked the cutting edge in front of the goal.
Argentina will now meet the winner of the second semifinal between Uruguay and Colombia in the final.
