KATHMANDU: Substitute Wout Weghorst struck a late winner as the Netherlands defeated Poland 2-1 in the Group D encounter of the 2024 Euro Cup at Volksparkstadion on Sunday.
Poland took the lead from Adam Buksa’s superb strike in the 16th minute of the game. Cody Gakpo equalized for the Dutch in the 29th minute when his shot deflected off a Polish defender and flew past Wojciech Szczesny.
Although the Netherlands were the dominant side in both halves, the Dutch failed to make their dominance count. Poland, which was without star striker Robert Lewandowski, also had chances but lacked finishing.
As the match headed for a draw, substitute Weghorst snatched the winner from a close-range finish within two minutes of coming on.
