KATHMANDU: Nepali embassies and diplomatic missions in different parts of the world celebrated the 17th Republic Day with gusto.
While Republic Day was celebrated within the country on Tuesday, some Nepali missions abroad celebrated the occasion on Wednesday as part of the three-day celebration. The main celebration was organized at the Army Pavilion in Tundikhel. All three tiers of government celebrated Republic Day with various programs, and the Nepali embassies and missions abroad also celebrated the occasion.
On April 24, 2006, then-King Gyanendra Shah relinquished his direct rule and reinstated the parliament, paving the way for the transition to a republic. This historic decision was driven by the armed struggle waged by the then CPN (Maoist) and the peaceful movement led by seven parliamentary political parties.
Subsequently, the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly declared the establishment of a republic on May 28, 2008. This historic day is celebrated every year as Republic Day.
Nepali missions in Washington DC, Islamabad, Abu Dhabi, New Delhi, Beijing, London, Geneva, Paris, and Brasilia, among others, celebrated Republic Day on their respective premises. Addressing the programs, the ambassadors said it is the responsibility of all Nepalis to institutionally develop the hard-earned republic and establish lasting peace, development, and good governance in the country. They hoisted the Nepali national flag on the embassy premises.
While representatives from the respective countries attended the programs, there were no ministers or constitutionally appointed officials present at the celebrations, unlike in Nepal.
