Ruling alliance enjoys two-thirds majority in National Assembly

KATHMANDU: The four-party ruling alliance enjoys a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly.

CPN (Maoist Center) is the largest party in the National Assembly with 18 seats. Coalition partners CPN-UML, CPN (Unified Socialist), and Janata Samajbadi Party have 10, 8, and 3 seats, respectively. This means the ruling alliance has 39 members, including the vice-chairperson, in the upper house.

The main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) has 16 members. Similarly, the Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (LSP) and Rastriya Jana Morcha (RJM) have one member each, while Bamdev Gautam is nominated by the President. One seat in the 59-member upper house, to be appointed by the President on the recommendation of the council of ministers, is lying vacant.

The Federal Parliament Secretariat is holding an election for the National Assembly chairperson on Wednesday. The ruling coalition has fielded Narayan Dahal of the Maoist Center for the position, while the NC has named Yuvaraj Sharma as its candidate. LSP has decided to support the NC candidate in the election.

The National Assembly comprises eight members elected from each of the seven provinces and three members nominated by the President on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers. The members serve a term of six years, with the term of one-third of the members expiring every two years.
